How DUI Police Officers Detect an Impaired Driver
DUI detection training teaches a police officer to observe the following clues when a suspect vehicle is in motion:
* A moving violation;
* An equipment violation;
* An expired registration;
* Unusual driving actions, such as varying speeds, weaving or following too closely; or
* Evidence of drinking or drugs inside the vehicle.
At night, police officers detect impaired drivers by observing the following vehicle operation:
1. Turning with a wide radius;
2. Straddling the center lane divider or fog line;
3. Appearing to be impaired;
4. Almost causing an accident with another vehicle or striking an object;
5. Weaving;
6. Driving on the shoulder of a roadway or driving entirely off the roadway;
7. Swerving abruptly;
8. Traveling at a rate of speed 10 M.P.H. below the speed limit;
9. Following too closely;
10. Drifting;
11. Tires on lane markers;
12. Braking erratically;
13. Driving into oncoming traffic;
14. Exhibiting a slow response to traffic control devices;
15. Signaling inconsistent with driving actions;
16. Making an illegal turn or turning abruptly;
17. Accelerating or decelerating rapidly;
18. Driving without illuminated headlights;
Just about any traffic violation at night will lead into a DUI investigation if you have consumed any amount of intoxicants. Be safe and do not drink and drive.
